Re: Walmart OMB and News

HOW BIG IS WAL-MART?

  1. At Wal-Mart, Americans spend $36,000,000 every hour of every day.                        [MILLION}

2. This works out to $20,928 profit every minute!

3. Wal-Mart will sell more from January 1 to St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) than Target sells all year.

4. Wal-Mart is bigger than Home Depot + Kroger + Target + Sears + Costco + K-Mart combined.

5. Wal-Mart employs 1.6 million people and is the largest private employer.  And most can't speak English.

6. Wal-Mart is the largest company in the history of the World.

7. Wal-Mart now sells more food than Kroger & Safeway combined, keeping in mind they did this in only 15 years.

8. During this same period, 31 Supermarket chains sought bankruptcy.  (are we surprised)

9. Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store in the world.

10. Wal-Mart has approx 3,900 stores in the USA of which 1,906 are Super Centers; this is 1,000 more than it had 5 years ago.

11. This year, 7.2 billion different purchasing experiences will occur at a Wal-Mart store.. (Earth's population is approximately 6.5 billion.)

12. 90% of all Americans live within 15 miles of a Wal-Mart.

13. The value of product for Wal-Mart passing through the port of San Diego each year is a larger sum than 93% of ALL countries Gross National Product  (GNP) ...and that is only ONE port ...one way that Wal-Mart gets it's stuff..

14. Of the 1.6  million employees, only 1.2% make a living above the poverty level..  (Interesting statistics eh, must be because they pay their employees so well)

15. Wal-Mart's head office is located and centralized in Bentonville.  Due to this fact, there are more millionaires per square mile there than any place on Earth.

16. The official U.S. Government position is that Wal-Mart's prices are no lower than anyone else's when compared to a typical families weekly purchases.  That's the view of the statisticians at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) responsible for calculating the consumer price index (CPI).

17.   92% of everything Wal-Mart sells, comes from China. Another 4% comes from Chinese owned companies in the U.S. or in 3rd world countries.  (Yes China is in charge here alright)

18. Wal-Mart and MOST large companies, take out life insurance on it's employees, without their knowing.  If an employee dies, ALL the insurance moneys go to the companies. i.e. An employee making $18,000 per year, dies, and the company might make as much as $1 million.  Most  often these moneys, coming from what is commonly referred to as "Dead Peasant Life Insurance Policies", is paid out to executives as bonuses. (A common practice, unknown by the common man)

19.   Wal-Mart now averages a "profit" (not sales) of $36 billion per year.

Re: Walmart OMB and News

Not withstanding the above, I see no reasons that the City of Stratford can't spend a few hundred thousand dollars to go against a rather large corporation at the OMB, and succeed.  Because some folk seem to think the cause is just and we are right!

The term "Most" is misleading and of course the usual from anti-corporate types. Through "most" in to the mix and people immediately think the stores are staffed by thousands of illegals that just got off the boat. That of course is not the case.

Certainly people working at Wal-Mart in Sao Paulo won't speak english, neither will the people in Shanghi or Mexico City.

The problem with all of this is that the fear mongering begins to get laughable when things like this creep in.

Don't go to Walmart because they don't hire Americans!!

Which again points to the fact that most of the Anti-Walmart hype is American based and only shows American statistics. How about some Canadian Statistics as it could be a totally different animal up here due to differences in labour laws, etc.

I think there are alot of suckers that have bought into the hype that Walmart has the lowest prices just because Walmart has told them so.

I tend to agree. The few times i have been in their stores I am amazed that prices are not markedly different than ..say..Zellers or in the US Target (which handles the same clothing lines as Zellers)

We bought GFD a New ipod nano...and shopped the prices at Best Buy and Wal-Mart.....they were virtually the same. TV's, more or less the same....a bar fridge for my folks...cheaper at CTC....a package of underwear for moi....cheaper at GT.

Yup I agree...lots of hype

It would be nice to know where this info came from. When you reference this type of material it always carries more weight.

Re: Walmart OMB and News

I still maintain that compared to our Zellers and Giant Tiger that Walmart has a better selection, better quality, and in a lot of cases better prices. Yes there are things that are priced the same but there is also stuff that the others don't have and at least unlike Zellers it's in stock.

Re: Walmart OMB and News

Spankie, I think you have hit it.  They have bigger stores, bigger sales.  Why/??f the prices in other stores are the same.  Well, if their stores are bigger, they must have more stuff--bigger selection, OTHER stuff than the other stores.  Hence if you want choice for "cheap stuff", then go the the big cheap stuff store!!  As a result of comparison shopping, if you are in the bigger store, with more stuff, you will likely purchase stuff.  The wheel gets bigger and turns faster.  If you have the financial resources to get big, you will likely be able to get bigger.  Economics.

City wins Wal-Mart fight
Updated 1 hour ago

The Ontario Municipal Board handed down its decision today in the Wal-Mart dispute in favour of the city.

Adjudicator Colin Hefferon wrote in his decision:

"After weighing all the facts and the arguments of opposing counsel, I find that Avonwood do (sic) not conform either to the planning policies set out in the 1993 Official Plan or with the progression or evolution of these policies in OPA 10 and that these policies represent good planning. Furthermore, it is my view that Avonwood's proposals are neither in the public interest nor represent good planning.

The Board therefore dismisses Avonwood's appeals against the decision of City  Council refusing its applications for amendments to the 1993 Official Plan and to Zoning  By-law 201-2000. The Board also dismisses the Avonwood appeal (other than the part  of the Tanurb appeal referred to below) against the decision of Council to adopt 10, and approves OPA 10 as modified in accordance with the 2008 and 2009  modifications as shown in Exhibit 183."

Well, I'm surprised.  Good for the City!!

Wait for it.......

here comes the same bunch fighting about the west end....

But of course the City now has no leg to stand on as the west end argument was part of the planning thing.

But Steel...Walmart said it was east side or nothing.
Are you saying they might go back on their word?
Who would think that a business with such high ethical standards and reputation ...(ahem)...would possibly go back on their word.
